Ngozi's bio:
Ngozi "Nome" Brown, AIA, ASID, NOMA, NCARB, NCIDQ, M. Ed., LEED AP® ND, EDAC, GPCP, is both a licensed architect and an NCIDQ-certified interior designer. She is also an Assistant Professor of Practice at the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design (FJSoA+D) at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where she teaches 1st, 2nd, and/or 3rd year design studio as well as two Professional Electives: Spaces of Confinement: The Architects' Dilemma and Archageddon: Architecture as Described through the Lens of Dystopian Literature. Brown also teaches a course titled Diversity and Design. These scholarly pursuits synergistically inform her Afrofuturism design aesthetic in practice.
Brown's expertise also includes learning environment design and evidence-based design – she is EDAC-certified by the Center for Health Design. Brown is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Tuskegee University where she completed her Bachelor of Architecture Degree. Brown is also a 4.0 GPA graduate of Concordia University, Portland Oregon where she received a Master of Education degree. Brown is certified by the United States Green Building Council as a LEED Accredited Professional with a specialty in Neighborhood Development. She is certified by the Green Building Initiative as a Guiding Principles Compliance Professional.
Brown has served on the AIA Arkansas Board of Directors as the AIA Central Section Chair; in this capacity, she worked on several committees including the Women in Architecture (WIA) committee and the Diversity committee. She continues to sit on the AIA Arkansas board as a Director. Further, she has served on the boards of both studioMAIN and the Architecture + Design Network (ADN). In addition, Brown has previously been appointed by Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson as a Special Commissioner of the Capitol Zoning District Commission, where she served as Chair. As a passionate advocate for the design profession, Brown has spoken to groups throughout the country, including senators and congressmen on Capitol Hill in Washington DC, the Little Rock Metro Rotary club, the Girls of Promise Conference annual event supported by the Arkansas Women's Foundation, and the Central Arkansas Urban League Youth Program's STEAM Youth Day. Brown was a speaker at the 2020 ASID National Conference as well.
Brown's passion for good design extends beyond building construction; as a volunteer docent for the Arkansas Arts Center, she is continually honing her craft and deepening her understanding of, and appreciation for, the fine arts - a practice which meaningfully informs and sharpens her design approach. Brown is also passionate about city planning, having recently participated on the mayor-appointed 30-Crossing Design Committee under the direction of the Quapaw Quarter Association (QQA). On this committee, a small team of five designers and community stakeholders were given the task to make aesthetic and functional recommendations for central Arkansas' 1-30 expansion project (most of these recommendations were subsequently adopted). And prior to her participation with that impactful project, Ngozi worked pro bono with the nonprofit organization, studioMAIN, to help design a master plan for the city of Jacksonville, Arkansas' "Main Street Mile" which the city leadership has used to successfully recruit private development.
In June of 2018, Arkansas Business Publishing Group honored Ngozi Brown's career accomplishments by inducting her into the 2018 class of 40 Under 40. And in September 2018, Brown was inducted in Building Design + Construction Magazine's Nationwide 40 Under 40 class. In 2019, Brown was honored as a National ASID Ones to Watch Scholar - one of only eight inductees in the country. To each and every project she brings professionalism, a vigorous work ethic, clear vision and tireless commitment to client satisfaction.

"Is Afrofuturism an escape? Sometimes. Who doesn't need a break every now and then? But Afrofuturism is ultimately about the here and now, one in which the echoes of the past and the future all assemble in the living present, a present, irredeemable save for rich insight from art, cultural demonstration, and the careful mining of our illustrious histories."
